Frequently Asked Questions Regarding DocuCard

Q. What is DocuCard?
A. DocuCard is a xerographically printable membership identification card document made from Xerox approved papers index paper and a 7 mil material that has been specially coated to accept toner.
Q. What configurations are available?
A. Several different standard formats are available.  Click here to learn more about DocuCard's standard formats.
Q. What card sizes are available?
A. The standard ID Card size is 3-3/8" x 2-1/8". The TwinCard size is 3-3/8" x 4-1/4".  The Butterfly size is 2-1/8" x 6-3/4".
Q. Is DocuCard patented?
A. Yes, DocuCard is protected under United States and International patents.
Q. What are the applications for DocuCard?
A. Any type of identification or membership card that requires the printing of variable data on a card which is tear-proof and waterproof, is an excellent candidate for DocuCard. Some popular vertical markets are: insurance, health care, finance, clubs and associations, education, direct mail, commercial, travel, manufacturing, and government. Call the DocuCard Hotline at 800-942-0384 or e-mail us for more information on vertical market opportunities. DocuCard applications are limited only by your creativity!
Q. Can DocuCards be imaged on the back?
A. Yes, the DocuCard carrier sheet can be duplexed. In addition, a WindoWell construction of DocuCard is available that has a rectangular hole (window) cut in the carrier sheet exposing the back of the card. Variable information can be imaged on the exposed part of the card.   WindoWell DocuCards are available in a single and double card configuration. WindoWell DocuCards may require a machine pitch change from pitch 7 to pitch 5 to reduce the imaging speed when duplexing so damage to the window does not occur.
Q. Do the WindoWell DocuCards cost more than the regular DocuCards?
A. Yes. Since there is an additional step involved to add the window.
Q. Can the card placement vary on the sheet?
A. Yes, card placement can vary 1/16" in either direction. However, it is not advisable to print near the edge of the card because toner transfer may not be achieved where the two materials meet. We suggest the customer not attempt to print within 1/4" of the edge of the card, either on the card itself or the carrier sheet.
Q. Are DocuCards available on 8 1/2 X 14" paper or as A4 size?
A. Yes.
Q. Can the card or the document be pre-printed?
A. Yes. Both the card and the document can be pre-printed according to the customer's specifications. The customer can have static information pre-printed on the back of the card prior to the assembly process. When the card is peeled off the sheet the information is already there.  Click here for more information regarding DocuCard specifications.
Q. Are there special charges for pre-printing?
A. Yes. In addition to variable costs for different combinations of printing options, there may be prep and setup charges on the first order. Contact the DocuCard Hotline at 800-942-0384 or drop us an e-mail for pricing.  You may also fill out a quote request form online to request DocuCard pricing.
Q. Are there any special machine modifications required?
A. It depends on how the customer is using DocuCard. Because of the uneven stack height, about 100 sheets can be placed in the feed tray at one time. Exit bins have a capacity of about 150 cards using the 4135.

If the application includes putting both a policy and an ID card page at the beginning or end of the document, the plain paper can be fed from tray 1 or 2 and the DocuCard document from tray 3 or 4. This allows the customer to print for quite some time.

If the customer is printing only ID cards, the Custom Application Services group has designed a special feed tray modification called a Tiltatron. The Tiltatron allows the customer to put about 400 sheets in the feed tray, enabling longer print runs.  A Stackatron is available for use in high volume printers to maximize output.  These  devices are available directly from CAS (585-427-1378). Lead-time is approximately two weeks.

Q. What is the DocuCard minimum order?
A. 10,000 sheets.
Q. Can I order samples?
A. Yes. Click here to request DocuCard samples.

So the customer can test the input/output capabilities of the DocuCard, Xerox will send 2,000 sheets of DocuCard to each customer after an order has been placed. There is no charge to the customer. They will receive the product within five days (allow additional time for custom paper or positioning) and will be asked to sign and return the DocuCard Test Approval Document before the actual order is manufactured.
